Weekend storm leaves thousands without power throughout the region

Workers from the Town of Eastchester Highway Department remove a tree that fell on a car on Wilmot Ave. earlier today.

Storm 03-13-10

The tree had stood on the property of Joe Cermele at 149 Wilmot Ave. Cermele says that he was in his house when heard the tree fall at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday. When he got out to the street, he saw that the driver was in the vehicle. Along with several other drivers who had stopped, he was able to pull the driver out of the car through the driver’s side window. Despite the vehicle being crushed by the tree, the driver, who was taken away by police, was not seriously injured. Wilmot Rd. remained closed Sunday afternoon. The fierce storm that moved through the area Saturday night left downed trees and power lines throughout the Lower Hudson region. As of Sunday afternoon, thousands remained without power.
