The Christian Science church building on Tanglewyld in Bronxville is for sale with a price tag of $1,995,000.
Houlihan Lawrence agent Sheila Stoltz, who is listing the property, said there has been a lot of interest in the building, which was built in the 1920s. Interested parties include church groups looking for a new home and people interested in turning the building into everything from a single-family home to condos to tearing it down.
A spokesman for the Bronxville church was not immediately available for comment.
Paul Hannesson, a spokesman for the Christian Science church’s Committee on Publication, said that the churches are independently governed by a local board of trustees and that decisions on closing, merging or moving are made locally. The church building is owned by the congregation, but any money realized by the sale goes to designated charitable or Christian Science programs.
He also said that several New York City churches have merged in the recent past as dwindling membership has made it too expensive to continue to own church buildings. He would not speculate on why the Bronxville church was for sale.
There are Christian Science churches in Mamaroneck, White Plains and Tarrytown.
