Eastchester School District Superintendent Marilyn C. Terranova joined New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and state education leaders at Gracie Mansion earlier this week to tout new legislation that aims to better protect students from sexual misconduct by teachers.
The proposed reform puts the power to discipline faculty and staff engaged in sexual misconduct into the hands of school districts, which will be able to fire teachers more easily.
Current law empowers outside hearing officers to impose penalties, including dismissals. School districts are bound by what the hearing officer decides.
Terranova, the president of the New York State Council of School Superintendents, said the changes would expedite removing teachers “whose conduct has demonstrated they should not be working with children.”
