EASTCHESTER
An 80-year-old driver was injured when her car struck a utility pole this afternoon, knocking down wires and cutting power to nearby homes, authorities said.
The driver was taken to Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville. Details on her injuries were not immediately available but they did not appear life-threatening.
The pole and wires came down on the car after the accident shortly before 2 p.m. at Harney Road and Scarsdale Avenue. The utility pole struck carries electrical and cable television wires as well as a 55-gallon drum transformer. Easchester Fire Capt. Brian Tween estimated six to 12 nearby homes would be without electricity for up to five hours.
There was no immediate word of any power outage from the downed wires.
