Elementary pupils in Eastchester will get a chance to play with the big kids on Sept. 29 when the school district hosts its first youth sports day.
The idea of newly promoted Athletic Director Jason Karol, the event will give kids in kindergarten to fifth grade a chance to participate in free clinics run by varsity coaches and sports teams.
Children can choose football, soccer, cross country track, volleyball or cheerleading clinics.
There will be food, raffles and prizes for participants.
Karol, a 29-year-old resident of Thornwood who moved up to athletic director this year after teaching at Eastchester High for five years, said the day is a chance for the varsity athletes to encourage the youngsters to play sports.
Scholastic sports begin in seventh grade, but many of the younger kids participate in recreation leagues in earlier grades.
“It will get them a little charged up about sports in Eastchester and give them role models to look up to,” Karol said.
He also hopes it will encourage the kids to come out to the high school games.
“Hopefully, we can increase school spirit and have the community come out to the games,” Karol said.
The event will take place from noon to 2 p.m. at the campus of Eastchester High School and Middle School.
