Local entry leads in ice cream flavor competition

To invent a new flavor, ice cream lover Liz McEntee DeCecco wanted something that sounded hunky dory.

“I was trying to think of some sort of name that has some kind of positive connotation,” said DeCecco, an Eastchester resident who lived in New Rochelle until two years ago.

So she created Hunky D’Oreo – chocolate fudge ice cream with a whipped cream ribbon and pieces of Oreos and cookie dough – for a Baskin Robbins competition.

It’s doing well. At the moment the 32-year-old’s entry is leading nine other finalists in the Create Baskin’s Next Favorite Flavor Contest. The ultimate winner gets to be featured nationwide as a Flavor of the Month later this year.

Those who know DeCecco may not be surprised to hear she’s ahead in this game.

For a career, DeCecco provides computer training for the Doe Fund, whichmore-> helps homeless and formerly incarcerated men find work and housing. But she’s always been an ice cream fan.

At her wedding reception at Iona College, she and her husband designated guest tables with ice cream flavors rather than numbers.

“We even had an ice cream sundae bar,” she said.

Her new ice cream flavor was not whipped up in her kitchen. Contestants use Baskin Robbins’ flavor creator page for that.

“I actually haven’t tasted it or anything like that,” she said. “I just figured it would be a good combination.”

For the competition, she and her rivals must rely on people to cast votes by noon Thursday. DeCecco is the only one of the top 10 who is from New York state.

Other finalists include French Silk Pie, Caramel Cashew Cheesecake and Thank You Troops, which mixes vanilla ice cream with cherries and strawberries and a blueberry ribbon.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Hunky D’Oreo had a comfortable lead with 31 percent of the vote, according to Baskin Robbins’ results page. In second place is Give me a BR-Ake – a ribbon of dark fudge with cookie dough and fudge brownie pieces in cake batter ice cream, with 24 percent. White Raspberry Tuxedo has 21 percent, and all the others are in the single digits.

Each one of the finalists gets a year’s worth of ice cream.

The ultimate champion will win a trip for two to Los Angeles and the chance to help the Baskin Robbins team develop the new flavor at the company’s training center, as well as $1,000 in spending money.

DeCecco is already thrilled with having gotten this far. If she won, that would be, well, an extra-sweet reward.

“I guess that would be the cherry on the sundae,” she said.
