Patients mourn Gloria Edis, longtime Scarsdale pediatrician

Patients of Dr. Gloria T. Edis, founder of Scarsdale Pediatrics, are mourning a profoundly compassionate doctor who cared so deeply about her young patients that she often called in the evening to check up on them after a visit.

Edis died at age 73 on Jan. 28 after a short battle with cancer, said her partner Dr. Scott D. Bookner. “It’s been shocking for patients and colleagues and everybody,” Bookner said. “She was such an active, vibrant person. She was extremely health conscious. She was a vegetarian. She exercised every day.”

While Edis lived in White Plains in recent years, she spent most of her life as a resident of Scarsdale, where she founded her practice in 1980. She graduated at the top of her class from New York University Medical College in 1963, a time when few women were in the medical field. Though Edis took off some years after college to raise four children, she was committed to her career once she started her business, often working late hours to see sick children, Bookner said. “She showed me an article a number of years ago from a pediatric journal about a woman in her 90s still seeing patients and said, ‘That will be me.’ And it wasn’t a joke. People honestly expected it would be her, that she would be seeing patients until she died. But everyone expected that it would be years from now,” Bookner said.

Carrie Trenk of Scarsdale said her four daughters, ages 17 to 23, were patients of Edis. “Even the oldest ones were still going to her,” Trenk said, adding that Edis will be missed. “She was always such a nice person and very calming,” she said. “She was very friendly and would always talk to us about what everyone was doing for work and school. I don’t know how she remembered everything about everyone.”

Patients are sharing memories of Edis on the Website of Riverside Memorial Chapel, recalling her kindness and expertise. “Dr. Edis took care of my daughter for the past 13 years. She was the doctor for my four nieces. She was always available, helpful, friendly kind and treated all her patients like friends. My heart goes out to the family on this major loss to our community,” wrote Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner.

Condolence cards for Edis’ family can be sent care of the Scarsdale Pediatrics office at 7 Popham Road, 3rd floor, Scarsdale, NY 10583.
