WEST NYACK Clarkstown South senior Karly Fishkin (Fishkin (23) left, Brianna Keaveney (14) right: Photo credit Frank Beccera Jr./The Journal News)set the tone with two early RBI and the Vikings went on to defeat intradistrict rival Clarkstown North 7-2 at Clarkstown South on Senior Day Friday.

The Vikings won their second straight Conference IV League A title.

Fishkin drove in Briana Keaveney from third in the bottom of the first to tie the score at 1-1. Fishkin repeated the feat — driving in Keaveney from third — Then she does it again in the third to put South (14-4, 8-0) ahead.

“I felt great hitting them,” Fishkin said. “It felt good to drive in those two runs to get it going.”

Vikings coach Maura Heebink is impressed with the way her shortstop has been playing all season.

“She hits the ball solidly and she’s a thinking batter,” Heebink said. “She really concentrates and focuses when she gets to the plate. If you are like that, then you as a coach can put them in when you want and they’ll become a clutch hitter like Karly is.”

Step one for the Vikings was to win the league again.

“We knew coming into the season that we had to work a little bit harder since we lost some key players,” Keaveney said (right, Photo credit Frank Beccera Jr./The Journal News). “Our team is able to pick up those key players and keep playing hard. It feels good to win the league.”

Nicole Ritsick went 3 for 4 and drove in two runs for the Vikings.

“I’ve been playing with (Rams pitcher Danielle) Borelli for a lot of years,” Ritsick said. “She’s a pretty good pitcher, so I pretty much went in very confident with my head in the game. I knew that it would be a good day.”

Heebink was impressed with Ritsick at the plate, but the coach said she believes Ritsick’s main value is in the field.

“There’s not a better defensive first baseman in Rockland County,” Heebink said. “She’s saved us so many times. She scoops the ball without hesitation. She hit very well and she’s a very good hitter but she’s the foundation of our infield.”

Keaveney picked up the win, allowing six hits and three walks while striking out 11. She also went 3 for 4 and scored three runs.

“I felt really confident,” Keaveney said. “I felt that my pitches were really working. I was throwing hard. I focused on hitting my spots.”

Sara Herskowitz, Gabby Palumbo, and Megan Atzl each drove in a run for the Vikings. Teammate Brianna Turchiarelli went 2 for 3.

Borelli, who took the loss, went 2 for 4 and drove in a run for the Rams (5-15). Stefanie Lomedico also drove in a run.

“We came out here to play,” Lomedico said. “We tried our best and we came out on the bottom.”

Here’s a look at the rest of the day in Section 1 softball:

In a new initiative, some of our merchants stayed open late last Thursday to accommodate Mother’s Day shoppers and it resulted in a busy, vibrant and profitable spring evening in the village.

As we promote shopping locally, many of you have cited the seemingly dearth of parking as a prime reason for shopping elsewhere. However, with a little advance knowledge and guidance, whether you are a resident, merchant or visitor to Bronxville, there are places to park for varying lengths of time without risk of getting a ticket.

Most of the parking in the village metered lots do require a permit between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., so be diligent in reading signs. However, all of these same meters labeled merchant or resident allow anyone to use the spaces after 3 p.m. each day.

For residents of the village, resident parking permits are available for $20 per year and entitle residents to park in those spaces in village lots designated “Residents Only” at any time. Parkers must still feed the meters.

Bronxville residents who need to park for the entire day (long term) in the village or near the train station may obtain a resident permit at Village Hall and park at the “Resident Parking” meters along the railroad tracks in the Kraft Avenue Lot or on the perimeter of the second lot on Kensington Road. These “quarters only” meters cost 50 cents per hour Monday through Friday and $1 per hour on Saturday. They are free on Sunday.

If feeding the meter is undesirable, residents may purchase a pre-paid commuter buy-out for an annual fee of $900. This permit allows parking at all of the meters mentioned above as well as the Avalon Lot on the West Side. In an effort to promote green initiatives and save valuable parking spaces, residents driving Vespas/motorbikes may park for free in the Avalon Lot after obtaining their free permit at village Hall.

If you are not eligible for a resident parking permit, you can still park at all street meters or in the public meter sections of the Cedar Street, Garden Avenue, Kraft Avenue and Lower Kensington II Lots. These meters all vary in length of stay from 90 minutes to 12 hours so read the signs carefully.

The longest term meters (up to 12 hours) are available at the following sites:

All meters on Kensington Road except for the first eight spaces nearest to 1 Pondfield Road

All meters on Meadow Avenue

All meters at the angled spaces on Stone Place

These spaces are a great solution for all-day visitors.

Parking is prohibited on all village streets between the hours of 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. and cars are ticketed accordingly. This is not only for the obvious needs of street cleaning and snow removal, but also to spot abandoned or suspicious cars left on village streets. However, overnight parking permits are available to residents and qualifying merchants and cost $230 per year. This permit allows a resident to park a vehicle in the Cedar Street, Garden Avenue or Maltby parking lot between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. every day as well as all day Sunday. However, if you do not use your car for commutation, this is not a good solution.

If you own a home in the village that does not have a garage or driveway as part of the property title or you have plans to purchase or rent such a home, you may put your name on the reserved parking waiting list and village staff will contact you three times when a space becomes available. If you are still interested even after the third notification but have yet to purchase or rent your home, you may still remain on the list but will move to the end. These reserved spaces are dedicated twenty-four hours a day parking spaces and cost $110 per month.

The village also has parking arrangements for merchants, both long and short term, so that street parking spaces will be free and available for store customer parking. If merchants or their employees park in street parking places, they are doing their business and the neighboring businesses a great disservice. To alleviate this outcome, we have many parking options for merchants and employees and urge them to call the village Parking Office at 337-6500 ext. 108 or 337-2024 to understand the variety of plans available.

As easy reference:

Two-hour parking

Cedar Street Lot: all meters

Garden Avenue: Lot 1st Row

Kraft Avenue: on street

Paxton Avenue: on street

Three-hour parking

Garden Avenue Lot: 2nd row

Kraft Avenue Lot: row facing stores

Twelve-hour parking

Garden Avenue Lot: rows 3 and 4

Kraft Avenue Lot: resident section

Kensington Road: all meters except the first 8 near the 1 Pondfield Road Medical Building

Meadow Avenue: all meters

Stone Place: all meters at angled parking spaces

Journalist Cheryl Strauss Einhorn will speak at the Scarsdale Public Library at 7:30 p.m. May 23 in a lecture on the World Bank. Einhorn, an award-winning veteran of print, radio and TV journalism who is also an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School, will dive into the question of whether billionaires and multinational corporations need help from the World Bank. She will also explore investments by the International Finance Corp., the World Bank’s investment arm, that go beyond its scope of helping people escape poverty and into funding hotels, shopping malls and mines. Einhorn wrote on this topic in Foreign Policy Magazine earlier this year. The event is a partnership between the library and the Scarsdale Adult School, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Doors will open at 7 p.m. Students from the Scarsdale Adult School Joy of Singing class will perform at 7:15 p.m. A $10 donation to the Scarsdale Adult School is suggested.

More than 100 people turned out to hear local teen and adult talent acts. Director Ellen Tiven-Moore said the money will go in part to replace the sound system in place since the center opened in 1999. “We’re really thrilled to be able to update and improve our sound system for parties and band nights,” she said. Coming up for teens on May 25 will be a pop-up skate park on Chase Road, which will be closed to traffic from noon to 4 p.m. Skaters of all levels are welcome and professionals will be on hand to help out, Tiven-Moore said.

The Tuckahoe Village Board will vote tonight on whether to ban lightweight bags at retail stores after it holds its third public hearing on the proposal at 8 p.m. at Village Hall, 65 Main St.

Tuckahoe would follow the City of Rye and villages of Mamaroneck and Larchmont in asking shoppers to bring their own bags and requiring merchants to use either paper or heavyweight, reusable plastic bags. The Town of Mamaroneck, which is also considering a ban, is facing heavy opposition from the grocery industry and Stop & Shop, the biggest supermarket in town.

Tuckahoe Trustee Stephen Quigley, the sponsor of the proposal, said he’s hopefull the ban will become law. “Significantly, in two well-publicized public hearings, we’ve only had one business protest it,” he said. “To me, the silence is a strong factor that the business community is not concerned and maybe is even in support of it.”

The protester, Deborah Scannell of Cafe 72, said she still opposes the proposal because she relies on plastic bags to serve her carryout customers. “Most people usually come in for lunch and breakfast. They aren’t going to bring their own bags. It’s not like going food shopping at the store,” she said.

Paper bags aren’t an adequate replacement, she contends. “Paper costs three times the amount of the plastic bag. It’s more difficult to carry. They don’t have a handle. And it doesn’t fit a to-go tray for lunch,” she said.

Scannell questioned why the board is even raising the issue, considering the sluggish economy. “I understand where they are coming from, but it’s a difficult situation. I think there are more important things to worry about in the Village of Tuckahoe than banning plastic bags now,” she said.

Quigley said that similar concerns have come up in discussions on the board. “Everybody agrees it’s a great idea that we shouldn’t have plastic bags, but the biggest thing against it is that it’s the government telling us what to do. The idea is we should all be doing this on our own,” he said.
